From Deidara to Pain: The Most Formidable Akatsuki Members in Naruto
In the Naruto universe, the Akatsuki was a gang of supervillains who desired unimaginable peace at any cost. There were 10 main members of the group, lead by Pain; each brought something special to the table. The black cloaks with crimson clouds that the members of Akatsuki wore made them instantly recognizable, and the haunting motif only added to their sinister reputation. Their brutal methods made them a major menace in the ninja universe.
The ultimate goal of Akatsuki was to kidnap Naruto’s tailed monsters and use their strength for themselves. Each member of the Akatsuki, from the cool-headed Itachi to the manipulative Sasori, had their day in the spotlight throughout the course of the anime series. This page will introduce you to the Akatsuki and provide some background information on their skills and characteristics.
Unlike most shinobi in the Naruto universe, the Akatsuki did not originate from one of the hidden villages. Over a period of decades, the organization changed shape and was led by a succession of different figures.
Despite their reputation for criminality and subversion, the Akatsuki have always acted with the good of the world in mind. It was common knowledge that they maintained a network of secret bases all around the globe, many of which were inaccessible owing to their remote locations or high level of security. Akatsuki is a Japanese term for dawn or daybreak.
Most Powerful Akatsuki Members (2023)
This list has been compiled based on the popularity and powers of the Akatsuki members. We have also included the official stats for some of the members, as mentioned in the Naruto Databook. So without wasting any time, let’s move to the list.
1 Tobi/ Obito Uchiha
Obito Uchiha shared some of Naruto’s ideals at the outset of the series, but circumstances led him to join the Akatsuki. Obito, who initially blended in like a ninja, rose to prominence as a pivotal figure in the series. After Madara recognized his potential and trained him to have good control over his powers, he assumed the identities of Tobi and Madara and fooled everyone into thinking he was an Akatsuki member.
Despite his skill in manipulating others, Obito was unsuccessful in recruiting Yahiko into the Akatsuki while he was still alive. Tobi Obito joined the Akatsuki after Nagato became Pain and took a different approach to settle their differences. His hallmark move, Kamui, which drew on his knowledge of Bukijutsu and Ninjutsu, was a major asset in battle.
He was able to stand his ground against his enemies with only one Sharingan eye after acquiring the Mangekyo Sharingan after Rin’s death. By stealing Nagato’s Rinnegan and implanting it in himself, Obito was able to significantly enhance his abilities. In fact, he went beyond the capabilities of a Hokage and became a Ten-Tails Jinchriki. This has made him Akatsuki’s most formidable fighter at the moment.
2 Nagato Uzumaki
Prior to his parent’s demise in the Third Shinobi World War, Nagato lived in peace in his native Amegakure. His Rinnegan (implanted by Madara) was awakened as a result of his parent’s death. His best friend Yahiko sacrificed his life during their battle for peace. Following a string of sad incidents, Nagato (a descendant of the Uzumaki clan) further descended into darkness and took the moniker Pain in order to cause devastation around the world by forming Akatsuki 2.0 (which we saw in the anime series) together with Konan, Tobi, and others. He decided to put an end to the hostility and violence between nations by becoming the leader of Akatsuki and bringing genuine peace all over the world.
Being the founder and the person who destroyed the entire Hidden Leaf village, Nagato was one of the strongest members of the Akatsuki. Nagato had enormous chakra reserves and was regarded as a brilliant sensor-type ninja because of his aptitude for sensing chakra. He was a master in Ninjutsu, and his Rinnegan also significantly boosted his power.
He accomplished a variety of things that one can only dream of, thanks to the Six Paths of Pain he created, making him the most fearsome opponent we ever saw. During the Fourth Shinobi War, Kabuto praised him as the second-strongest shinobi to be resurrected after Madara himself. Nagato later turned into a good guy and entrusted his quest for peace to Naruto.
3 Itachi Uchiha
Itachi Uchiha is a memorable character in the Naruto anime series and is regarded as the ultimate prodigy and one of the strongest members of the Uchiha clan. He infiltrated the Akatsuki to protect the Hidden Leaf village and is known as the “Shadow Hokage” due to his good deeds. Although he died due to a terminal illness, he helped his brother Sasuke become more powerful, which added depth to the narrative.
Itachi was highly skilled in Ninjutsu, Bukijutsu, and Genjutsu, with enormous chakra reserves. He was a genius in combat and had exceptional Genjutsu abilities on par with Shisui. Itachi could execute Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi flawlessly after unlocking his Mangekyo Sharingan. He could also create a flawless Susanoo, which was unbeatable.
Finally, Itachi’s sacrifice for his nation and brother was unmatched, and he continued to protect them until his dying breath. His character remains a fan favorite and an iconic figure in the Naruto series.
One of the three Legendary Sannins of Konoha was Orochimaru. But his greed for his ambitions and aims caused him to veer from the straight and narrow. In his pursuit of immortality, he started conducting experiments on human bodies, for which the town abandoned him. After leaving Hamlet, he eventually joined the Akatsuki Organization. There, Sasori became his partner, and the two of them excelled in the company up until he met Itachi. Orochimaru attempted to steal Itachi’s body when he joined Akatsuki because he desired the Sharingan eyes for himself. But in the end, Itachi’s devastating Genjutsu proved to Orochimaru was more powerful.
Orochimaru was regarded as one of the most powerful figures in the anime series in addition to being one of the strongest members of Akatsuki. He was a Hokage-level shinobi who had previously been given consideration for the Fourth Hokage position. Orochimaru was still regarded as the only shinobi who could do so despite having extensive knowledge of Ninjutsu, nature transformation, etc.
He was the most adaptable shinobi we had ever seen because of his extensive education, which allowed him to perform a variety of jutsu and techniques. Shortly after Itachi defeated him, he left the Akatsuki and went in quest of another corpse.
Konan was a childhood friend of Yahiko and Nagato, and like them, she was a war orphan. The trio was trained by the Legendary Sannin, Jiraiya, and Konan became a powerful kunoichi of the Amegakure shortly after. She was also one of the founding members of the original Akatsuki group, where she partnered up with Nagato after Yahiko’s death.
As a member of the Akatsuki, Konan was considered an S-rank criminal. Her natural talent for Origami led to the development of her Paper Ninjutsu techniques, and her “Dance of the Shikigami” attack was particularly powerful. This technique allowed her whole body to become sheets of paper that she could control at will, earning her the nickname “Angel.”
Konan almost killed the powerful Obito with her abilities, but he was able to escape with his Izanagi technique. Unfortunately, this led to her eventual demise. Despite this, Konan was one of the most skilled and valuable members of the Akatsuki, greatly aiding Nagato’s operations.
6 Kisame Hoshigaki
In the Naruto series, Kisame Hoshigaki stood out as a notable foe, thanks in large part to his alliance with Itachi Uchiha. He used Samehada, an extraordinary and powerful sword that could absorb the chakra of his foes. He was referred to as “the Monster of the Hidden Mist” and was one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. To join the Akatsuki, where he was paired with Itachi, he left his village.
Because he belonged to both the Akatsuki and the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, Kisame was able to exert a great deal of power. He practiced Kenjutsu to a very high level and had chakra stores on a superhuman level. He acquired the moniker “Tailed Beast without a Tail” as a result of Samehada and his talents. He also had the ability to call forth enormous sharks to fight alongside him and was an expert in water-release tactics.
Due to his special skills and powerful physique, Kisame was a vital member of the Akatsuki who could not be replaced. He became popular among viewers thanks to his part in the show.
Deidara is a well-known character in the Naruto series, primarily because of his unique and explosive style of ninjutsu. He was a former member of the Iwagakure clan and part of the Explosion Corps. However, he abandoned his village and joined the Akatsuki after being recruited by Itachi Uchiha. He was the youngest member of the organization and was first partnered with Sasori, then later with Tobi.
Deidara was a highly skilled and powerful S-rank level missing-nin. His special powers and skills in the art of explosion earned him praise from his leader, Nagato, even after his death. He was able to defeat the fifth Kazekage, Gaara, and the three tails, Isobu, on his own.
Deidara’s battles were often visually spectacular, and his abilities with explosive paper mache were awe-inspiring. However, his battle against Sasuke was a disaster, as Sasuke’s lightning powers were a natural enemy to Deidara’s explosive techniques. Despite being at a severe disadvantage, Deidara fought fiercely until his last breath, ultimately choosing to end his own life rather than be captured by his enemy.
Sasori was popularly known as “Sasori of the Red Sand” because he left a mark of blood whenever someone faced him and his puppets. He was a famous shinobi from the Sunagakure village and worked as a member of the Puppet Brigade. Sasori killed the third Kazekage, who was regarded as the most powerful shinobi Sungakure had ever produced. After a tragic childhood, he was recruited to the Akatsuki by Konan and was initially paired with Orochimaru. Later, he joined Deidara and concealed his true identity by disguising himself as one of his puppets.
Sasori was an S-rank level missing-nin and was instantly recognized as one of the most powerful members of the Akatsuki. He could maintain his youthful form by converting his body into a puppet. Furthermore, he had mastered the art of puppets, and his skills were extraordinary. He was a master puppeteer and had unique techniques that no one else could pull off, such as creating puppets from human bodies.
Moreover, he could use the powers and abilities of the human puppets they had before they died. During his final battle, he unleashed a total of 298 human puppets against Granny Chiyo and Sakura. We also saw Sasori incorporate many poison techniques into his puppets. However, he died at the hands of his grandmother after an intense battle.
Kakuzu was a highly dangerous S-rank missing-nin and an expert shinobi from the Takigakure village. He lived an extraordinarily long life, having been able to endure for many years because of his special skills. He shared a partnership with Hidan, another immortal, and the two of them were referred to in the Akatsuki as the “Zombie Combo.”
Using his Earth Grudge Fear method, Kakuzu was able to harvest his opponents’ organs, mainly their hearts. He might be able to extend his own life and get stronger by doing this. He could revive himself with the hearts after dying and use them as masks to attack his adversaries. He was feared by many people because of his talents, which made him a very formidable foe.
However, Kakashi of the Sharingan ultimately ended Kakuzu’s immortality by defeating him in combat. Even after he was killed, Kakuzu’s abilities served as an example to many would-be shinobi despite his defeat.
Shikamaru’s battle against Hidan is indeed a memorable one. Hidan was a missing shinobi from Yugakure village and the last partner of Kakuzu in the Akatsuki. He was a devout follower of Lord Jashin and had a jujutsu-like technique that allowed him to kill his opponents with just a drop of their blood. This made him a formidable opponent, and he joined the Akatsuki after abandoning his village.
Hidan proved to be a valuable member of the Akatsuki by killing Asuma Sensei and the Two-Tails’ jinchūriki. He was also skilled in Bukijutsu, which he incorporated into his jujutsu technique. His immortality made him survive fatal wounds, but he was eventually defeated by Shikamaru’s intellect.
Shikamaru, being a genius strategist, used his intelligence and cunning to outsmart Hidan. He used Hidan’s own technique against him by drawing his blood and making him unable to move. Shikamaru then buried Hidan alive, effectively trapping him for eternity. It was a satisfying end to the battle and a testament to Shikamaru’s intelligence and skill as a shinobi.
In conclusion, the Akatsuki were a band of formidable and perilous shinobi that sought to capture every tailed beast. Each member of the squad possessed special skills and abilities that made them all fearsome adversaries. Each member contributed something special to the table, from the explosive style of Deidara to the puppet manipulation of Sasori, the immortality of Kakuzu, and the blood control of Hidan. Despite being ultimately vanquished, the Akatsuki will always be recognized as one of the most recognizable antagonistic organizations in anime history.
