Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 – Qualcomm’s flagship chip for Android smartphones
Qualcomm’s flagship chip for Android smartphones is finally available. At the Snapdragon Summit 2022, the chipmaker revealed the next version of its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, which will power flagship devices expected in 2023.
The latest chip, as expected, is called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform, and it offers several technological improvements over its predecessor, including increased performance, improved graphics, and more.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 includes the company’s most advanced AI Engine and the Snapdragon Smart feature. In addition, according to the company, the 8 Gen 2 processor integrates AI throughout the system.
The Qualcomm Hexagon processor powers the AI Engine, which promises faster and more natural language processing, multi-language translation, and AI-based camera features.
The Hexagon processor also has a newly updated architecture, which includes micro tile inference and a larger tensor accelerator, claiming up to 4.35x increased AI performance.
It is also the first Snapdragon mobile platform to support INT4, an AI precision format, with a 60% improvement in performance/watt for long-term AI inference.
Qualcomm claims that it has improved the Hexagon processor throughout for up to 4.35x faster AI performance.
Qualcomm also claims to be capable of handling more complex tasks, such as the real-time translation of a language into multiple languages.
The company also added the Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology, which includes real-time hardware accelerated ray tracing, a new Adreno GPU with up to 25% better gaming performance, and a Kryo CPU with up to 40% more power efficient than its predecessor.
Furthermore, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the first mobile platform to support the Unreal Engine 5 Metahumus Framework.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 includes the Qualcomm 5G AI Processor and the Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF System. In addition, the Snapdragon platform is also the first to support 5G+5G/4G Dual-SIM Dual-Active technology.
In addition, the chip includes the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 connectivity system, Wi-Fi 7, and dual Bluetooth connectivity. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 also includes Snapdragon Sound technology for improved audio and calling.
