Zile – Free Emacs-like UNIX text editor


GNU Zile is a free lightweight Emacs-like UNIX text Editor. It stand for Zile Is Lossy Emacs. It is very useful for small footprint systems because it has very small RAM Memory footprint, (a typical binary is about 100Kb) and quick editing sessions (it starts up and shuts down instantly).


Zile is a fully customizable, self-documenting real-time open-source display editor. It has all basic editing features of Emacs’s such as 8-bit clean, which allowing it to be used on any sort of file, and the number of editing buffers and windows is only limited by available memory and screen space respectively. Registers, minibuffer completion and auto fill are also available. Function and variable names are identical with Emacs’s.

Zile’s keyboard shortcuts are specially designed to look like Emacs keyboard shortcuts.
